Printed Blinds
VOCs1Shutter manufacturers have traditionally favoured high VOC paint technologies over the years, such as petroleum-based polyurethanes and nitrocellulose acrylics. More so polyurethane (Two-pack) because of its inherent strength, versatility, and low cost. The high level of solvent in these traditional paint technologies allows the paint to cure very quickly, which is a major advantage for high volume factories for output reasons.

Governments around the world however, are making changes to their laws for VOC’s due to the associated health and safety risks, with countries such as Sweden, and some U.S states all but banning solvent based systems and changing to waterborne technologies in manufacturing. Even China is considering mandating a change away from the current use of high VOC based paints.

So what are VOCs?

Volatile Organic Compounds have a high enough vapor pressure at ordinary room temperature to significantly vaporise and enter the atmosphere. The accidental release of VOCs into the environment can damage soil and groundwater, however it is the vapours that escape into the air through the application and drying of paint that pose the greatest risk of short-term and long-term adverse health effects, and that’s not even considering the flammability factor. Concentrations of many VOCs are up to ten times higher indoors than outdoors.

Conventional paint technologies have around an 84% VOC solvent content and 16% solids, whilst a typical waterborne paint system has around 70% water, 20% solids and only 10% solvent. By using a waterborne paint with low VOCs, the quality of the air indoors becomes safer for those who live or work inside.

BUYING WATERBORNE SHUTTERS – WHAT TO ASK

Decision made, you’re going to invest in waterborne painted shutters. Clearly the cons relate to the application of the paint in manufacturing so you don’t need to consider that when choosing a retailer to buy from right? Waterborne painted shutters are all the same aren’t they?

No, they’re not.

solvent paint

Waterborne paint has a different viscosity to traditional solvent-borne paints, it handles, tints and sprays differently. Dry, low humidity in the air can result in the paint drying too quickly throughout application process. This is a particularly important consideration if the paint is being applied by hand with a spray gun.

Many small to medium factories who assemble shutters made from wood, polymer (PVC) and aluminium, don’t have the set up to extrude all these materials from virgin product themselves. They purchase pre-painted profile and components from an extruder and they cut and assemble shutters from this. Neither do they have the expensive paint system set-up to effectively repair damaged surfaces to the same quality of finish as the extruder.

paint shutters LIFactories this size will touch up damages by hand with a spray gun. As the waterborne paint can dry quickly on application, applying by hand this way will result in some areas of the shutter more rough to the touch than others, and not of the same high quality finish as the rest of the panel. This is due to the waterborne paint drying before it hits the substrate. The rough feel is tiny particles of paint that dried before it hit the substrate.

Most large-scale factories have invested in paint machines and installed spray booths with heated curing rooms and air movement devices to increase production by reducing curing time. Water is corrosive to a variety of metals so these factories use stainless steel pressure tanks, and high quality applicator nozzles on paint machines. Machine application guarantees the exact same distance and speed consistently throughout the paint process so the paint finish is consistent and of the highest quality. These factories not only assemble shutters, they extrude from raw material so they control the supply chain and the quality in all areas of fabrication, unlike the mid size operators mentioned above.

For peace of mind, check if the factory you are buying from is the extruder of the raw materials and that they use only virgin pellets for polymer shutters, not recycled product in the extrusion mix. And do they machine paint the materials themselves.

OPUS Polymer shutters are made from only high quality virgin pellets derived from Taiwan. Our factory is large scale and extrudes the materials themselves. They paint by machine using waterborne paint and components are cured in heated rooms, then wrapped in a protective film that is only removed after assembly is complete and prior to packaging. This minimises any risk of damage and maintains the quality of the finish from the very start of the process right though to installation in your home.
+ 1. What products can we use for printed blinds?
Custom printing is available for a wide range of both outdoor and indoor blind styles.
The majority of outdoor blinds, awnings and shade products can be printed, such as Ziptrak® track guided blinds, straight drop and window awnings, along with larger retractable shade structures and folding arm awnings.
Indoor products such as roller blinds, panel blinds, and some other specialty interior window furnishings can also be custom printed to your requirements
+ 2. Can we print on clear PVC blinds?
No. The fabric needs to pass through a heating stage during the print process, which could cause PVC to melt.
+ 3. What fabrics can we print on?
A range of indoor and outdoor blind fabrics are available for custom printing. Outdoor fabrics include mesh and acrylic canvas. Interior blind products allow you to select from room darkening, textured, light filtering and screen fabrics.
+ 4. Can we print on both sides of the fabric?
Some fabrics are able to be printed double sided. Considerations for reverse printing include the type of fabric, colour of the print and the location of the blind in relation to light and sun. When working with white or light colours in contrast to a dark background on a screen fabric, the best result is achieved using a single sided print.
+ 5. How do we make sure a printed image across multiple blinds doesn’t look disjointed when there are gaps between the blinds?
This is managed through the artwork and design process. Our graphic design team will ensure that the integrity of your printed image is maintained across multiple blinds. If you are unsure of the visual impact of gaps between blinds, we encourage you to request a ‘Premium Proof’ for viewing prior to final approval.
The imagery and design does require more detail than a single blind print, however a printed image spanning across multiple blinds can provide a real ‘wow’ factor in a space.
+ 6. What happens when the artwork crosses over a join line in the fabric?
Overlaps at seams are allowed for in the design and print process. If your blind is large enough to warrant joins in the fabric, this will not affect the continuity of your image.
+ 7. What colours can we print?
All Pinz printed blinds use a white fabric base and your image or design is printed over this in full colour, removing the need to print with white ink. Using this technique allows us to colour match fabrics by printing, and produces fantastic vivid colours and detailed images. There are also considerations regarding double sided printing with darker colours, please refer to question 4 above.
+ 8. How long will my print last? Will it fade?
This is dependent on the elements, eg. Weather – UV light, heat, wind, etc.
A blind facing full sun will fade more than if it was inside.
A print could start to fade after 3 years, however could well outlast the lifetime of the product.
+ 9. How do I clean my blind over the printed area?
Most blinds can be cleaned with mild detergent and water with a soft rag. DO NOT USE alcohol based products or anything that could scratch the surface.
+ 10. What kind of ink is used?
In most cases, the ink we use is latex. Latex is the latest in modern printing technology. Blinds printed with latex ink are certified to strict international environmental standards for low chemical emissions and meet a range of stringent human health criteria.
Latex inks are water-based, completely odourless and do not contain hazardous chemicals making them ideal for printing window coverings and awnings.

This minimises any risk of damage and maintains the quality of the finish from the very start of the process right though to installation in your home.
+ Polymer Shutters

polymer1OPUS Polymer Shutters are made from a water-resistant, engineered synthetic extrusion using only high quality virgin powder derived from Taiwan, and finished in a luxury non-toxic waterborne paint. The extrusion withstands high temperatures, making this shutter the ideal choice for Australia’s harsh environment.

Unlike many factories who buy materials in from 3rd parties and extrude using recycled pellets (not virgin powder), our factory is large scale and extrudes the materials themselves. This means we control our supply chain and can guarantee the highest quality in raw materials and construction.

We differ too in paint process. Most factories apply paint by hand in an un-contained environment. The quality of finish this way, depends on the skill of the operator and his attention to detail. Our factory paint all materials by machine in a contained environment, which guarantees a high quality finish every time. They use a with a UV inhibitor to provide a hard-wearing finish for maximum durability throughout everyday use.

THE IMPORTANCE OF SOLVENT FREE PAINT

Freshly painted components are cured for 48 hours in heated rooms, then wrapped in a protective film that is removed only after assembly is complete and prior to packaging. This minimises any risk of damage throughout manufacture and maintains the quality of the finish from the very start of the process right though to installation in your home.

Every panel is co-extruded with metal inserts for strength and durability and constructed with high strength joints. All frames are assembled with tough nylon keys and screws, which means the shutter won’t sag, split, crack or warp. A claim we stand by with our fully transferable 25 year warranty.

OPUS Polymer is available in a wide range of modern flat stile and frame options as well as traditional beaded choices, with 7 modern paint colours to choose from. The 64mm, 89mm or 114mm louvres close both upward or downward into the “Euro-close” top and bottom rail system, which provides you with maximum flexibility for control of light and air flow. Traditional standard close option is also available.

Shutters are available in hinged or bifold hinged panels with non-mortise hinges, track bifold and sliding shutters, and a variety of special shapes. Track systems include clear anodised aluminium top and bottom track with high quality hardware, and box out boards are made from the same quality polymer extrusion with a machine painted finish.
